Den Haag (The Hague), The Seat of Dutch Government
# Madurodam – A miniaturised compendium of famous Dutch buildings and features, including miniature trains with lift bridges, ships, and many other goodies. Located at George Maduroplein 1, phone (070) 355 3900, hours: Daily 9:00 – 17:00, but late spring and summer hours run later. Call first.
# Mauritshuis Museum – Possibly the finest small art museum around in a former classic Dutch Palace. It houses works by Rembrandt, two of Vermeer’s most famous works, Jan Steen, Frans Halls, Dou and other 17th century artists plus 15th and 16th century masters and still life’s. Easily doable. Located next to the Binnenhof, the seat of government in The Hague, at Korte Vijverberg 8, phone (070) 302 3456, hours Tues. – Sat. 10:00 – 17:00, sun 11:00 – 17:00.
# Binnenhof – The history of The Hague begins in this courtyard. The Ridderzall (Hall of Knights) is the oldest part dating to the 13th century. The surrounding buildings of the medieval courtyard were added at various stages. Located at Korte Vijverberg & Hofweg (in the center), phone (070) 364 6144, hours Mon – Sat. 10:00 – 15:45.
# Museum Gevangenpoort – A medieval prison complete with torture chamber and plenty of explanations provided with a sheet in English. There are many sections, even one for the wealthy, yet a small building. Located at Buitenhof 33, phone (070) 346 0861, hours: Tues – Fri. 11:00 – 16:00, Sat. –Sun. 12:00 – 16:00 guided tours hourly.
# Leiden- A University Town and Pilgrim Host
# Pieterskerk – No longer a place of worship, this church is closely associated with the Pilgrims, and their leader John Robinson is buried there. Located at Pieterskerkhof 1a, phone (071) 512 4319, hours: daily 13:30 – 16:00.
# Leiden American Pilgrim Museum – Located in a 17th century house which has been outfitted to give you an idea of how the Pilgrims lived during their eleven years in Leiden. Located at Beschuitsteeg 9, phone (071) 512 2413, hours: Wed. – Sat. 13:00 – 17:00.
# De Burcht – Around the corner form the Pilgrim Museum is an 11th century fort on a hill. Climb to the top for an overview of Leiden.
# Molenmuseum DeValk (Windmill Museum) – A real experience! This grain mill offers seven floors of ladder climbing plus a peek at the inner workings and the miller’s quarters on the ground floor.
